The Challenge
How do we develop a gender-inclusive mandate that takes into consideration the needs of women in the city?
Hienrich Böll Nigeria desired to understand the relationship between urban policies, urban interventions, the role of governance and the different actors in Lagos. For this project, they were looking to encourage more inclusive policies that cater to the needs of women in Lagos.
the Solution
In collaboration with Redclay Advisor, our insight process included work with women from different walks of life to design recommendations on how the laws, policies and implementing agencies can be restructured to achieve more sustainable and inclusive infrastructure and service delivery for all citizens of Lagos.
THE OUTCOME
Our analysis on the perspectives of women in the urban planning process particularly as it pertains to mobility, flooding and waste management helps us identify the complexity of realities they face carrying out multiple activities daily. By asking them questions about how they experience the city, we were able to understand that there are diverse needs that coexist in Lagos, and are essential to the balance of the relationship between everyday life and experiencing the city.
The final output was a discussion paper titled “Female Vision For A Greater Lagos In 5 years” shared with city planner from the the Government of Lagos State.
