Inside Out Studio: A Participatory Approach to Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls

With support from the Ford Foundation, for its maiden edition, the IO Studio carried out immersive public participatory theatre performances in Ikorodu and Alimosho Local Government in Lagos Nigeria. The purpose was to increase the diversity of voices and narratives on Violence Against Women and Girls and broadening the evidence base on what works to prevent Violence Against Women and Girls.

What we Learned

 

Participants easily understood the depiction of Violence Against Women and Girls represented by drama. The drama performances helped people understand the enormous psychological effect of survivors.

Culture of silence; people fear disclosing details of Violence Against Women and Girls for fear of attack by the perpetrators.

Participants acknowledged fear of attack and silence by families of survivors and perpetrators.

This Toolkit by IO Studio provides A Quick Introduction for Social Project Designers and Implementers on How to Use Participatory Theatre as a methodology for community intervention and social change.
